Windows 3.1 was a 16-bit operating system, which at the time of its development was codenamed "Janus". The operating system was created and marketed by Microsoft Corporation and was intended for use on personal computers at home. It was the first operating system in the Windows-based operating system series, which was the 3.1.x series of operating systems. It was eventually replaced by the new Windows 95 operating system, which provided 32-bit support instead of the 16-bit one provided by Windows 3.1.
Windows 3.1 was first released for sale in the month of April 1992. Windows 3.1 was intended to replace Microsoft's older Windows 3.0 operating system. The new operating system has made many improvements in features compared to the old Windows 3.0 operating system, as well as to the codebase of the underlying operating system, which is MS-DOS. New improvements in the codebase have provided improved performance as well as stability. It has also improved support for media content as well as workgroup networks. It was also the first operating system to feature True type fonts.
